The Blair Witch Project was a groundbreaking movie that lined up this new Blair Witch with a lot of potential. If you remember when TBWP came out, then you remember the constant talk of if it’s real or not. July 30th 1999 moviegoers were left in shock after they saw what, to them, seemed to be stock footage of 3 teenagers lost in the woods and then seemingly murdered. None of them felt natural and they were relentless. Movie Review: The Blair Witch Project (1999) SPOILERS. But this movie just took the jump scares to an obnoxious level. They're a cheap way to scare people, but a lot of people have fun with them, so I get it. I'm not actually too sensitive about them in general, I understand that directors weave them in for fun, because despite all the gripes, go to a jump scare movie in a theater and you'll hear a lot of screaming and laughing. They didn't let you forget for a second that this movie didn't take place in the 90's.Īnd then there were the jump scares.

They had drones, portable GPS devices, cell phones, jump drives, battery chargers, hard drives to dump SD cards, special op style LED's. The campers had way more modern gadgets than necessary. They really wanted to drive home the fact that this was a modern remake. There was another aspect of Blair Witch that really took me out of the movie. There's scratchy microphones, screaming, and did I mention the endless camera shaking? A lot of screaming too. Like the original, there's endless running, screaming and camera shaking. It happens in modern times, but it follows the original very closely. So, I suppose Blair Witch is like a reboot of Book of Shadows? Not really, because Blair Witch feels like a scene-by-scene reboot of The Blair Witch Project. It's odd because there's already a sequel called Book of Shadows, which was about a group of people who do the exact same thing. The scares come fast and furious, and they do not relent until the very last frame, leaving the audience thoroughly shaken. There's something evil hiding in the woods.īlair Witch is like a sequel to The Blair Witch Project, where a group of people go out and basically recreate what happened to the original Blair Witch crew.

It literally feels like being locked inside of a deranged funhouse with your worst nightmares. The final 20 minutes are home to some of the most claustrophobic and nerve-wrenching moments the horror genre has seen in quite some time. When things get cooking, the film takes a pretty relentless approach to the scares, and the last act is undeniably intense. Wingard and Barrett definitely bring their own flavor to the world created by Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick, expanding upon the mythos and everything we thought that we knew while planting a veritable treasure trove of easter eggs within the film for the fans to discover. Make no mistake, though Blair Witch is very much a sequel in every sense of the word, and at the end of the day it’s the movie we’ve all been hoping for. Given the fact that the second one was so far out of the box in comparison to the original, I’m guessing the decision was made to play the events close to the chest, if only to salvage the fanbase and introduce Elly Kedward to a brand new audience. Well, one thing’s for sure… director Adam Wingard and his longtime collaborator, writer Simon Barrett, certainly do and they’ve done so with hardly any missteps.īlair Witch only really makes one mistake… it never strays too far from the groundwork laid by the original movie and at times feels like more of a remake that takes advantage of today’s technology than it does a sequel.

It seemed as if no one understood how to make a follow-up to the phenom that was the original film. As a result it remains one of the more reviled sequels of all time.

It goes off the rails and never delivers the goods that the original film and even the various stellar TV tie-ins such as “Curse of the Blair Witch” and “The Burkittsville 7” did. It was literally the sequel that nobody wanted.

In the year 2000 when Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 was released, the Blair Witch fanbase cried foul.
